SCA's virgin fibre raw material now

SCA Skog supplying all the wood fibre raw material, from SCA's own forests as well as external purchased wood fibre raw material, to our Swedish kraftliner mills Obbola and Munksund is since April 9th 2008 holding the FSC Chain-of Custody and Controlled Wood standard certification. These standards place demands on work methods for traceability and origin control of the raw material.

Creative Challenge

In connection with the development of our presentation liners, we have launched a Creative Challenge for children. One might wonder what children and SCA Presentation Liners have in common. There is actually plenty. It is the perfect paper to draw and colour on, so we asked the children of our customers all over Europe to help us illustrate this. This unifying initiative has been extremely successful with well over 1,200 children taking part. All participants have received a gift, but three special winners (in different age groups) from each market region are receiving a special prize to be shared with their schoolmates for an educational initiative.

This new branding translates into tangible expressions of our trust and pride in the SCA name. It also demonstrates our confidence in the ability of each of our mills to produce paper with well defined specifications, making SCA paper a unique product. We are moving from a set of products manufactured in specific mills to a well-defined branded product portfolio from SCA Containerboard.

Collapsed roof at Lucca mill with no people injuries

On the evening of May 1st, 2009, part of the roof covering the final part of PM2 collapsed. The mill was closed for the public holiday so nobody was in that area and nobody suffered any physical injuries.

Earlier closure of New Hythe mill

(Press Release - Diegem, 18 May, 2009 ) SCA advances the previously announced closure of its mill in New Hythe, UK. In June 2008, SCA announced the divestment of its conventional corrugated business in UK and Ireland to SAICA. The decision was taken according to the company�s strategy, with a focus on specialized packaging in UK and Ireland.

At the same time SCA announced that its containerboard mill located in New Hythe, with a capacity of 260,000 tons testliner and fluting would also be closed down. At that point the timetable for closure of this mill was intended to be mid 2010.

Despite the tough market situation and the unfortunate accident of the PM2 building, we are pleased to communicate positive news about our Lucca mill. The "Fondazione Giuseppe Lazzareschi", an organization promoting Health & Safety in the Italian Paper Industry, recognised the quarterly newsletter we create for our employees since 2005, as a communication "best practice" and decided to award our Lucca mill for this initiative which improves the Safety culture awareness and can increase the Safety standard in the mill.

Witzenhausen mill powers up with waste

After a three years' construction period, the energy needs of our mill in German Witzenhausen are now fully covered by RDF - refined household and industrial waste opportunely treated.

The 265,000 tons of waste come from more than 1 million inhabitants of twelve rural districts. It is screened, cleaned, separated from heavy metals and other inorganic contaminants, to make sure that only high heat value content material is left over.

This product is then used as 'fuel' in the RDF power plant and replaces the 30 years old natural gas system, which will only function as a backup in emergency cases.

A new house for the two paper machines in Lucca

Sustainability at work in our Munksund mill

SCA's sustainability target for improved water usage has been put into place at a new wastewater treatment plant at our Munksund paper mill. The new treatment plant will reduce oxygen-consuming matter in wastewater contributes and helps SCA towards its target of reducing the specific organic content of wastewater by 30% between 2005 and 2010. Construction on the plant commenced at the beginning of 2008 and has been recently completed.

SCA Containerboard ran a customer satisfaction survey from August 1st to September 30th, 2009 and had almost 250 people participating in the survey. This is quite a good result for a site which welcomes on average 1800 visitors per month. The profile of our participants was divided between 70% men and 30% women with the majority between the ages of 36-45 years old.
