Rationalised stock yields big savings

When an SCA Containerboard expert showed a customer how his stock could be simplified, it brought about significant savings and simplified stock warehousing.

A UK customer had been using about 4,000 tonnes per year of Testliner 3 from SCA Containerboard New Hythe, and 1,000 tonnes of Testliner 2 annually from another supplier. He wondered if there was a way to reduce the number of paper grades and save warehouse space.

When SCA Containerboard UK Sales Manager Mark Hanson heard about this, he put the customer in touch with Michael Devine of Technical Customer Service.

In June 2008, Michael and the customer met. Michael learned that the Testliner 2 was being used for print sensitive applications. “I explained that the print surface of SCA Containerboard Testliner 3 is broadly identical to that of the Testliner 2,” says Michael. He backed up his comments with market intelligence.

£100,000 savings

The customer compared samples of paper and board and was able to verify the similar performance of the two papers. As a result, the customer switched to SCA Containerboard Testliner 3 for his print sensitive applications.

This has generated cost savings of about £100,000 per year and has greatly simplified his warehousing. “Our relationship is excellent,” reports Michael. In fact, the customer now counts on SCA Containerboard Customer Service to help benchmark all his paper suppliers.
