Currently, all SCA Containerboard mills conduct online infrared scanning. Automated corrective actions prevent parameters from exceeding defined limits. And all customer reels are classified and monitored via a dedicated IT application.
Moisture evaluation on the customer reel level is based on the following guidelines formulated by CEPI and agreed with the FEFCO customer confederation.
- Average moisture content (%)
- Peak-to-peak max difference CD moisture variation (full width customer reel, 15 cm box measuring resolution)
- Peak-to-peak max difference MD moisture variation (full width customer reel, 15 cm box measuring resolution)
- Peak-to-peak max difference total moisture variation (full width customer reel, 15 cm box measuring resolution)
In addition, a calculated variation parameter – normalised MD variation – is used to compare different paper machine characteristics (scanner speed, machine speed, width, etc.).
Together, these monitoring and evaluation procedures ensure that SCA Containerboard effectively manages reel moisture variation levels. In fact, most SCA Containerboard products outperform the CEPI guidelines, providing customers with consistency and reliability.
