Rwandan Orphans get help from SCA

17/05/2010

Two schools in Rwanda were looking to improve the tools used for students studying.  Former colleague, Jean-Paul Résimont (Managing Director of SCA Containerboard 2004-2009) had been contacted by some Belgian friends working in Rwanda asking for assistance at their schools.  As a result of this, he got SCA involved by donating old computers and other office supplies.

The schools, GSO Groupe Scolaire Officiel in Butare & Centre des Jeunes in Kigali, offer education to orphans who still would like to pursue their education even though it is not funded by the state.  It costs approx 55€ per student per trimester to attend school and of course, the teaching tools they have are not always up to date.

“In Rwanda, primary school is state funded so most children can attend but once these students get to secondary school level, the cost has to be taken on by the families and these students don’t always have the resources to continue with their education.” explains Jean-Paul Résimont.

To help in this matter, Jean-Paul contacted SCA to see how we could assist.  As a result, SCA offered to donate approx. 50 computers and SCA Containerboard sponsored the shipment to Rwanda. We were very pleased to see that very soon after arrival the computers were already being used by students!.

“When I visited the country on a private visit, the urgency became clear immediately” said Jean-Paul. “Our organisation started off as a private initiative but it was obvious we wanted to do more and through discussions with local contact persons in Rwanda we were able to set up collaboration with SCA”.
