Product safety

SCA Containerboard paper grades are, under normal and foreseeable conditions of use, suitable for direct contact with dry, non-fatty food, as well as food types that are washed, peeled or shelled before consumption. Our Kraftliner grades also fulfil legal requirements for direct contact with fatty and aqueous food.

Industry guideline for the compliance of Paper & Board materials and articles for food contact.pdfFor papers only approved for direct contact with dry food and intended to be used in direct contact with fatty and aqueous food, we recommend to use an appropriate barrier. It’s also worth noticing that for our Kraftliner grades when used for certain moist, aqueous and fatty  food, a barrier might be needed for technical reasons i.e. to protect the paper from physical deterioration.

The main legislation concerning food packaging and materials in Europe is the framework regulation 1935/2004/EC on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. SCA Containerboard paper is produced in accordance with the German BfR recommendation XXXVI, including requirements for raw materials and additives, as well as purity requirements for the end product. These recommendations provide a good methodology to ensure compliance with the framework regulation.

In addition, all SCA Containerboard mills have upgraded their quality management systems to be in compliance with the EC regulation 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice for materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

Food safety is a top priority among EU and national authorities. This leads to a stricter regulatory environment also for food packaging materials and articles. We are closely following regulatory initiatives both on EU and national level through our own internal expertise as well as through heavy involvement with our trade associations. We are continuously updating our standards to meet any new requirements and regulations.

To help you understand what we are doing in this area, we have produced a brochure dedicated to this subject.  Click on the image below to download a copy and learn more about our efforts to ensure Food Safety in your product.
